Some years ago, Chimamanda Aadichie shared a “TED Talk” about what she termed “the danger of a single narrative.” To see her talk, click HERE.
Aadichie urges us to hear stories from differing perspectives so that we can begin to see the big and broad narrative of God’s work in our world. Over the summer, I will lead a four-month book group to look at four stories that can help us to see others' perspectives. This is a chance for us to see life from differing perspectives so that we can begin to empathize with others and understand some of the issues facing our world.
• In May, May 29, we will read The Lemon Tree which explores the experience of two families with a connection to one house in modern Israel. The book brings the conflict between Israeli and Palestinian families down to its most human level.

• In June, June 26, we will read Things Fall Apart, a classic in the history of African literature. It tells the story of African encounter with European settlers in the late 1800’s.

• In July, July 24, we will read Broken Horses by Brandi Carlisle. It tells the story of Carlisle’s journey from poverty in the state of Washington to musical success, and her struggles to balance her sexuality and faith.

• In August, August 21, we will read The Sentence which tells the experience of Native Americans and asks what the living owe to the dead and how do we live with our memories.
